Ello stranger

Well, I almost forgot what you look like!

I've had a bit of a break this year to see some of the world, but now I'm back home and ready to crack the ink and tools out again.

I'm at a Christmas craft market today in Westmoor, Newcastle and looking forward to the Open Studio event at the end of the month.  I'll be at Mushroom Works as usual,  selling 20x20cm artwork for just £20 as usual. Hope to see you there,  I'll keep you posted on the details x

The Preview Review

The preview night of the Ouseburn Open Studios at Mushroom Works went fandabeedozee.

People turned out in their hundreds to look around the studios and meet the artists inside and hundreds of 20x20s flew off the walls in just two hours. I think I saw around half of mine in the queue to the till. Exciting!

It's very flattering watching customers take my work off the wall and lovely to meet people and answer their questions. I tried to earwig on a couple's discussion on which 20x20s to buy where my Emperor Dragonfly was one of the contenders, but my Batfink super-sonic sonar radar was on the blink. They did buy it in the end though, and my Queen Bee.

A very good night.

If you'd like to come along, the Mushroom Works will be open 10am-6pm Saturday and Sunday too, get yourself down!

Ouseburn Open Studios 2013- The Preview

It's tonight!

This weekend, participating venues in this year's Ouseburn Open Studios will throw open their doors and allow all you lucky people in to come see artists, designers and makers in their studios. Ask questions, see demonstrations, commission work, have a nosy and drink wine whilst you do.

The Mushroom Works is hosting its usual exclusive 20x20 sale of work - little pieces of artwork created especially for the occasion, measuring around 20cm square and selling for just £20. I know it seems too good to be true, but it's for real! 20x20s make brilliant christmas presents too.

I have work for sale in the 20x20s - black and white illustrations, coloured Scandinavian-style patterns and my favourite character - Hipster Owl - is making his third annual appearance.

Come down and see us! Click on the link for more info:

Ouseburn Open Studios 2013

Busy, busy!

The annual Ouseburn Open Studios event is almost here! From the 22nd November,  you can come to participating cultural venues in the region to see artists in our natural habitat,  see where we work, commission artwork, ask questions and have a chat over a drink and cake.

I've spent the last few weeks immersed in producing work for the exclusive 20x20 sale of work, only at the Mushroom Works. Buy specially-created work measuring about 20cm square for only £20! I know it seems to good to be true, which is why it's so popular!  20x20s make brilliantly and original gifts, particularly with Christmas approaching.

Here's a peek at some of mine..

Ice Ice Baby

Name: Today's Doodlecaff is at home!

Ate: A pistachio meringue from Grant's artisan bakery in Hexham
Drank: Mad Hatter tea brought back from a weekend in Yorkshire

Creative Coffee

I love coffee, and I love a bit of Flat Caps Coffee

Flat Caps is found in the basement of Elula gift shop on Ridley Place, Newcastle  upon Tyne, and is well-known locally as one of the best coffee shops in the Toon. The chap who runs it, Joe, is passionate about his coffee and knows his stuff - I like getting him to choose my coffee for me, because you always get to try something different and discover delicious things. The carrot and houmous sandwiches and homemade cakes are winners too.

I spotted a competition on the Flat Caps website a few weeks ago, inviting us all to get creative about our love for coffee, whether that be via a short story, poem, joke etc. Well I got creative with my fineliners, drawing myself with a big cup, in a fog of delicious coffee smells on a bed of coffee beans. Sometimes I love smelling coffee even more than I love drinking it.

I am very pleased to be one of the winners, you can see my drawing below:

Scandi Eye Candy

Hot off the press!

This is the first framed print of one of my Scandanavian influenced bird and flower designs, which will be for sale at the annual Open Studios event in Newcastle upon Tyne. These will be for sale in the famous 20x20 sale at Mushroom Works

I love Scandinavian design - the simple, clean minimilastic look really appeals to me, but then so does the colour and pattern of dalahasts, enamelwear and traditional embroidery. This print has its roots in painted enamel cups and plates, which usually feature items from nature, lots of flora and flora.

If you're in the North East, pencil the last week of November into your diary and come see us. Further plans to be announced!

It's a prince!

Oh boy! The bosom of the UK swelled with patriotic pride tonight, as Wills and Kate welcomed their bouncing baby boy into the world.
Whilst I'm not so excited for them that I'd queue for 6 hours hours outside Buck House to have my photo taken next to the easel displaying the announcement, the arrival of a baby is a rather lovely occasion and I like to make a fuss.

Here's a few pieces I've made for some new babies recently (with some details blurred for privacy). Should anyone be thinking of sending the royal baby a gift - or any other baby - do get in touch!
